What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?

Stay the course! When the waters get choppy, perseverance and determination will get you across the finish line!

What advice would you give a candidate?

Keep smiling! When things get challenging, keeping a friendly face & sense of humour will help the entire crew crush any challenge that comes our way!

Cats or dogs?

Cats. The independence mostly is why I prefer them as a pet. And they eat mice!

What’s the funnest part of your job?

I love seeing others having fun! So providing those opportunities and sharing our waterway with others every day makes my job very fun & fulfilling!

Pick one; paddle boarding, swimming or hiking?

Paddle boarding – Such a great way to get on the water and so portable! Watching our crew billie goat them up LaCloche Mountain to Lake Topaz for a paddle is always fun to watch as well!

What was your most memorable moment or event at work and why?

In recent memory, that has to be the time the stray cat was a stow away on the boat and decided to make an appearance on one of our cruise ship tendering transfers! Coaxing it out of the under deck spaces of the boat over the following few days and watching it run for its life once we opened up the deck and found it was pretty hilarious!

Where are your studies, education or life experiences leading you in life?

I have spent my entire lifetime from a child onward learning and teaching sailing and eventually on to the Marine Training Center at Georgian College to earn my 150 ton Transport Canada Masters Certificate.

Favourite movie or tv show?

Mayday. I know that sounds suspect, but I am always fascinated with the forensics of determining what lead to a disaster. I also extensively read Marine TSB investigation reports as I believe they provide valuable information about what not to do!

Wondering if Canada Customs will bring the dogs?

Alex’s sense of humour, hard work and seniority have resulted in her being the lead on our deck crew. She can also mix a mean cocktail and has a knack for making our bar menu fun and tasty!

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?

Best advice I’ve ever received is to treat people the way you would like to be treated!

What advice would you give a candidate?

Always pack a bathing suit and towel on day tours, no matter the weather or time! You’ll regret it if you don’t!

Cats or dogs?

100% dogs! (Petition for captain Chris to let us bring dogs to work!)

What’s the funnest part of your job?

Joking around with fellow crew and Captain Chris :))

Pick one; paddle boarding, swimming or hiking?

Paddle boarding, but only if we have the electric air pump onboard!

What was your most memorable moment or event at work and why?

When we forgot the pizza onshore and Captain Chris had to go back with the zodiac tender and deliver pizza to the Heron.

Where are your studies, education or life experiences leading you in life?

Currently in my fourth year of my bachelors in water science at Trent University, and planning to follow up with my masters in environmental engineering in the fall. After school I’m hoping to find a career in water system design and treatment…..if that doesn’t work out I’ll see you onboard!

Deck Crew/Steward
Sydney
Sydney is a senior member of our crew and has always brought her top game to the job. Sydney has been on our team for over three years and is one of our Chief Stewards on some events and cruises. In the off-season, Sydney is continuing her studies at Nipissing University, pursuing her BA in Criminal Justice and plans to continue on to teachers college. Sydney is one of our in-house mixology pros, and her professionalism and experience in all aspects of her crew position contribute to the success of any event aboard. If a beach volleyball game ever breaks out unexpectedly, Syd should be your first pick on your team!

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?

Life is short, do what makes you happy.

What advice would you give a candidate?

Be ready to work outdoors rain or shine, be prepared to change plans on the fly.

Cats or dogs?

I love BOTH.

What’s the funnest part of your job?

Hiking and swimming at Topaz is always fun and I love working night tours when we have live music. It’s always so lively and we catch all the great sunsets the North Channel has to offer!

Pick one; paddle boarding, swimming or hiking?

Swimming! I love being in the water!

What was your most memorable moment or event at work and why?

When Alex, Chris and I tried to measure the depth of lake Topaz on a paddle board and the passengers were looking at us like we were crazy. OR the time we had a cat onboard (it had snuck on the boat without us noticing)!

Where are your studies, education or life experiences leading you in life?

I am currently in my third year of school at Nipissing University. I am taking BA in Criminal Justice with a Minor in Biology. I plan on going to teachers college after my degree. :)

Favourite movie or tv show?

Currently Outlander or Game of Thrones but it changes all the time. I love adventure and fantasy series!

Deck Crew/Steward
Rebecca
While Rebecca has been with our team for only one season so far, she joined our team with some impact! Rebecca has been great for engaging with our crew and guests on a next level basis! Rebecca is a keen outdoors enthusiast and brings a genuine, warm and animated personality aboard with her. If you are looking for one of our crew to make a scene out of a surprise birthday or anniversary celebration aboard the boat, Rebecca is your girl!

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?

Live fully in the present because life's too short to live anywhere else.

What advice would you give a candidate?

Be prepared for a hell of a ride! This job is exciting and fun, but holds many responsibilities that require you to stay on the ball at all times. If you are up for a dynamic multitasking challenge that makes you earn your sea-legs, go for it!

Cats or dogs?

Doggos! Their sass scale tends to be much smaller than cats.

What’s the funnest part of your job?

Interacting with the passengers onboard. I would say embarrassing them with loud and obnoxious birthday or anniversary songs would probably be one of my favourite things.

Pick one; paddle boarding, swimming or hiking?

Definitely would have to be hiking to a lake in my bathing suit with an inflatable paddle board.

What was your most memorable moment or event at work and why?

Watching the glorious display of fireworks on Canada Day from the boat was a spectacular moment. Not only did we have the best unobstructed view from the North Channel, but we had live music onboard, which made the night extra memorable. A floating party is the best party...or it could be the time a stray cat decided to come aboard the Grand Heron.

Where are your studies, education or life experiences leading you in life?

Life is always pushing me to be outside sharing creation with others. I see myself as an advocate for healthy living and am inspired to direct others in the same direction.

Favourite movie or tv show?

The Office (US). I've watched it multiple times and wont stop for no one.
